St. Peregrine Laziosi

About Saint Peregrine

Saint Peregrine was born in Forli, Italy in 1260.  His family was affluent, so Saint Peregrine lived a privileged life.  Before converting to Catholicism, Saint Peregrine was an anti-papist and anti-clergy.

Saint Peregrine Converted

Saint Peregrine and a group of protesters attended a sermon given by St. Philip Benizi.  The group of protesters drove St. Philip from the pulpit and Saint Peregrine slapped him.  St. Philip extended his other cheek to Saint Peregrine rather than fighting back.  Saint Peregrine was so overcome with guilt and remorse that he apologized to St. Philip.  He no longer went out with his companions and spent his time praying.

 Saint Peregrine Entered the Servites

Saint Peregrine had a vision of the Blessed Virgin.  She instructed him to go to Siena.  He did as he was told and joined the Servants of Mary, also known as the Servite Order when he arrived.  St. Philip Benizi became his superior.

Saint Peregrine Developed Cancer

Saint Peregrine did penances which consisted of standing whenever possible.  It is said that he did not sit down for thirty years which resulted in varicose veins and cancer in his leg and foot.

His doctors decided to amputate his foot.  Saint Peregrine crawled to the foot of a cross and prayed for hours.  He fell asleep and was visited by Jesus who touched his foot.  When Saint Peregrine awoke, he was cured of his cancer.  For this reason, Saint Peregrine is the patron saint of Cancer, AIDS, and other diseases.

Many Catholics give a Saint Peregrine medal or a Saint Peregrine charm to a loved one who suffers from cancer in the hopes that Saint Peregrine will intercede in their behalf.  They hope that wearing the Saint Peregrine pendant and praying to the saint will offer hope for a cure from cancer.

 Novena To St. Peregrine
Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His holy Mother.
You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand.
Obtain for me the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in my heart a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men.

Deliver me from the infirmities that afflict my body (especially.....).

Obtain for me also a perfect resignation to the sufferings it may please God to send me, so that, imitating our crucified Savior and His sorrowful Mother, I may merit eternal glory in heaven.

St. Peregrine, pray for me and for all who invoke your aid.
