Saint Luke Biography

  •     Saint Luke was originally known as Lucas which is an abbreviation of Lucanus.
  •     Saint Luke lived in Antioch and he was not Jewish but Greek.
  •     Even though Saint Luke was not Jewish, he was very learned in Jewish traditions.  He spoke both Aramaic and Greek.
  •     Saint Luke was a physician by profession, as can be seen in Colossians 4:14 when St. Paul refers to him as, “the most dear physician”
St Luke Patron Saint
  •     It is believed that Saint Luke studied medicine at The School of Tarsus.  This is most likely where he met St. Paul.
  •     Saint Luke is first seen in Acts when he meets St. Paul.  The two men travel together to Europe to preach the gospel.  This is how Saint Luke becomes known as Saint Luke the Evangalist.
  •     St. Paul left Philippi but Saint Luke stayed behind to continue his work as Evangalist.
  •     After three years, St. Paul returned to Philippi and he and Saint Luke went on a long voyage along the coast.  They traveled to Jerusalem and were met by an angry Jewish crowd.
  •     When St. Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea for two years, Saint Luke visited him regularly.
  •     St. Paul writes to Timothy while he is imprisoned and mentioned Saint Luke in (2 Timothy 4:7-11) "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. . . . Make haste to come to me quickly. For Demas hath left me, loving this world. . . . Only Luke is with me”.
  •     After St. Paul is martyred, not much is known about Saint Luke.  It is believed he wrote the Gospel in Achaia.
  •     Saint Luke died at the age of seventy-four in Bithynia.  It is not known if he died as a martyr.
  •     Saint Luke wrote the most extensive books of the New Testament.  His Gospels are the most superior and literary of any others.  Saint Luke used a rich vocabulary in his writings.

Patron Saint Luke

Saint Luke is the patron saint of artists, physicians, and surgeons.  Many Catholics who have Saint Luke as their patron saint wear a Saint Luke medal or a Saint Luke pendant in his honor.  They recite prayers to St. Luke asking for his intercession for personal requests.
