St. Kilian

About Saint Kilian

Saint Kilian, also known as Saint Killian was born in 640 A.D in Ireland. He was a missionary in Franconia and converted Duke Gozbert to Christianity.

In 689, Saint Kilian told the duke that he was living in sin because he was married to his sister-in-law, Geilana. Geilana was so angry with Saint Kilian, she sent soldiers to where he was preaching and him beheaded along with St. Colman and St. Totnan who were with him.

The relics of Saint Kilian and his companions are still preserved today. On the feast of Saint Kilian on July 8, the glass case containing the skulls of the three martyrs are paraded through the streets and then displayed in Wurzburg Cathedral.

Catholics crowd along the parade route to pay homage to Saint Kilian. They wear a Saint Kilian medal or a Saint Kilian pendant in his honor. Saint Kilian’s Day is one of the most popular feast days celebrated in Germany each year. The feast day includes devout prayers, mystery plays depicting events from the life of Saint Kilian, and festivals.

Picture of St. Killian

Most artistic renditions of Saint Killian depict the saint dressed in bishop’s robes. In his hand he holds a large sword. Saint Kilian stands between two other priests. They are often shown being martyred by the command of the Duchess.

Another picture of St. Kilian shows the three martyrs in a stable and a blind priest is cured at their graves. The picture of St. Kilian is shown on seals and coins also.

St Kilian Patron Saint
Prayer to St. Kilian

God, you called missionaries from Ireland with Saint Killian
to take the message of the gospel to Franconia and Bavaria;
Grant that the church may draw strength from their examples,
and never lack zeal to proclaim your love when the going is difficult:
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
