St. Isaac Jogues

About Saint Isaac Jogues

Saint Isaac was born on January 10, 1607 in Orleans, France.  He was ordained into the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, in 1636.  The first mission of Saint Isaac was in Quebec, Canada.  In Quebec, his mission was to convert the Huron Indians.

The Iroquois Indians, enemies of the Hurons, imprisoned Saint Isaac and tortured him in 1642.  He was rescued by the Dutch who lived at Fort Orange in Albany, New York and he was recalled to France in 1643.

After recovering from his ordeal, Saint Isaac Jogues returned to the Iroquois on a mission of peace.  Unfortunately, Saint Isaac was captured by a Mohawk war party on his way to the Iroquois.  The Mohawk killed Saint Isaac in 1646.

St Isaac Jogues Patron Saint

North American Martyr

Saint Isaac Jogues and the other Jesuit missionaries who accompanied him became North American martyrs.  They went to North America hoping to teach the Native Americans about the Christian faith and the love of Jesus.  Saint Isaac Jogues was a martyr in the United States.  He was killed in New York, on his way to Canada.  Before Saint Isaac Jogues left for North America for the second time, he said, “My heart tells me that if I am the one to be sent on this mission I shall go but I shall not return' But I would be glad if our Lord wished to complete the sacrifice where He began it. Farewell, dear Father. Pray that God unite me to Himself inseparably.”

Saint Isaac Jogues Remembered

Saint Isaac Jogues is remembered by the millions of Catholics in the United States today.  Many Catholics wear a Saint Isaac medal or a Saint Isaac pendant in honor of his martyrdom in the United States.
