St. George

Saint George Biography

Saint George was born to Christian, noble parents between 275 A.S. and 285 A.D. in Nicomedia of the Roman Empire. Gerontius, his father, was a Roman soldier of Cappadocia and his mother, Polychronia was a citizen of Palestine. Saint George was raised according to Christian beliefs.

Saint George’s Parents Die

When Saint George was fourteen years old, his father died. A few years later, his mother died, as well. After the death of his parents, Saint George went to Emperor Diocletian to join the military. Saint George had great success as a soldier, being appointed as the imperial guard of the Emperor by the time he was only twenty years old.

Diocletian Arrests Christian Soldiers

In 302 A.D., Diocletian ordered that every soldier who practiced Christianity should be arrested and all other soldiers were to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods. Saint George refused to carry out the order, pronouncing to Diocletian his faith in Jesus Christ. Emperor Diocletian tried to convince Saint George to denounce Christianity by offering him wealth, land, and slaves but Saint George never faltered.

Saint George Sentenced to Death

Diocletian ordered that Saint George be tortured and put to death. After being sentenced to death, Saint George gave all his earthly possessions to the poor. Saint George suffered many tortures, such as being lacerated by a wheel of swords and dragged through the streets. He was eventually killed by beheading on April 23, 303.
