Saint Francis of Assisi Became Ill
Saint Francis of Assisi became seriously ill in 1204 which led him to question his spirituality. When he recovered, St. Francis joined the army of the Count of Brienne. He had a vision which opened his eyes to spirituality.
Saint Francis Changes His Lifestyle
After Saint Francis of Assisi had his spiritual visions, he avoided sports, drinking, and time with his friends. They joked with him, asking if he was planning on getting married and he replied, “yes, a fairer bride than any of you have ever seen". Saint Francis of Assisi was referring to “lady poverty”. He spent numerous hours alone, praying for enlightenment. Saint Francis began caring for lepers and for the poor. Eventually, Saint Francis of Assisi has a vision of Jesus Christ while he was in the San Damiano Church. Jesus spoke to him saying, “Francis, Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins".
Saint Francis of Assisi Founded the Franciscan Order
Saint Francis began living strictly by the words of Matthew 10:9 where Jesus tells his followers to go spread His word and take no money, food, or other possessions with them. Saint Francis of Assissi gave up all his possessions and devoted himself to the ways of Jesus.
Saint Francis of Assissi wore rough clothes, went barefoot, and preached repentance. Followers began to travel with him and they lived simple lives, wandering the mountains of Umbria preaching. Pope Innocent III allowed Saint Francis to establish the new order of the Franciscans.
