About Saint Francis de Sales

  • Saint Francis de Sales was born on August 21, 1567 to noble parents in Savoy. France. He was the oldest of twelve children.

  • Saint Francis was educated in La Roche and Annecy. His religious education and academics were taught by the Jesuit brothers.

  • Saint Francis de Sales attended the College de Clermont in Paris when he was twelve years old.

  • At the age of thirteen, Saint Frances became depressed and despair swept over him when he thought he was doomed to Hell. His fear was so great that he became bedridden with illness.

  • Saint Frances de Sales went to the Church of Saint-Etienne des Gres in 1587 and his fear of Hell disappeared. He then dedicated his life to Jesus. Saint Frances believed that whatever God wanted of him, it was good.

  • Saint Francis’ method of teaching became known as the Way of Divine Love or the Devout Life.

  • St. Francis de Sales studied theology and law at the University of Padua. It was here that he decided to enter the priesthood. He believed that Jesus was calling him to a life of service and sacrifice.

  • Saint Francis de Sales graduated in 1592 and entered the clergy. In 1593, he became the provost of the cathedral chapter of Geneva.

  • Saint Frances de Sales devoted himself to converting Protestants to the Roman Catholic faith while he was serving in Geneva.

  • Saint Francis created a sign language in order to teach the deaf about Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. For this reason, he was named patron saint of the deaf.

  • In 1602, Saint Francis was named Bishop of Geneva.

  • Saint Francis de Sales died on December 28, 1622 while traveling with the Duke of Savoy.

  • Saint Francis was beatified in 1661 and canonized in 1665 by Pope Alexander VII.


Saint Francis de Sales Venerated

Saint Francis de Sales is venerated today by many Roman Catholics. They wear a St. Frances de Sales medal or a St. Frances de Sales pendant in memory of this great saint who converted so many people to the Catholic faith.

Catholics recite a Saint Frances de Sales prayer in his honor and wear a St. Frances de Sales necklace as a reminder to proudly acclaim their belief in Catholicism.
