St. Florian

History of St. Florian

Saint Florian is a Christian saint who lived during the fourth century during the rule of Diocletian and Maximian. He was a soldier in the Roman army and responsible for a brigade of firefighters.

Saint Florian secretly believed in Christianity and when Aquilinus, a persecutor of Christians, ordered Saint Florian to give a sacrifice to the Roman gods. Saint Florian refused and was beaten with clubs, spikes, and burned with fire. After suffering many tortures by the Roman soldiers, Saint Florian was drowned in the Enns River with a large stone tied to his neck.

Giving Saint Florian jewelry to firefighters is a traditional Catholic gift, praying to Saint Florian for his intercession in keeping the firefighter safe. There are many styles of Saint Florian jewelry available:

  • Saint Florian Medal

  • Saint Florian Medallion

  • Saint Florian Pendant

  • Saint Florian Cross

All of these medals can be attached to a silver or gold chain to make a Saint Florian necklace that the firefighter can wear every day for protection against injury.

Saint Florian Prayer for Firefighters

Dear God, Through the intercession of our patron, Saint Florian, have mercy on the souls of our comrades who have made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of their duty, and on all who have gone before us after years of faithful discharge of their responsibilities which now rest on ourselves. Give us Grace to prepare each day for our own summons to Thy tribunal of justice. Into Thy hands O Lord, I commend my spirit. Withersoever Thou callest me, I am ready to go. Merciful Father of all men, save me from all bodily harm, if it be Thy will, but above all, help me to be loyal and true, respectful and honorable, obedient and valiant. Thus fortified by virtue, I shall have no fear, for I shall then belong to Thee and shall never be separated from Thee. Amen.
