About Saint Elmo

Saint Elmo, also known as Saint Erasmus of Formiae was a Christian martyr who lived during the third century.  He died in 303 A.D. in Illyricum which is Croatia today.

The feast of Saint Elmo is celebrated on June 2 in the Catholic Church.  Many Catholics wear a Saint Elmo medal on this day in remembrance of this Christian martyr and Holy Helper.

Saint Elmo’s Fire

It is believed that Saint Elmo patron saint of sailors received that title because when he was preaching about Christianity, a thunderbolt hit the ground next to him and he was unscathed.  Sailors took Saint Elmo as their patron because of the many lightning strikes on the masts of ships and the danger of sudden lightning storms at sea.

The lightning strikes on the masts of ships became a symbol of the protection of Saint Elmo and became known as Saint Elmo’s Fire.  Catholic sailors often wear a Saint Elmo medal to protect them from the dangers of a storm at sea.  Loved ones also give a Saint Elmo pendant as a gift to sailors who are sailing away from home.

St. Elmo and Christopher Columbus

An original passage from the second voyage of Christopher Columbus states, “On Saturday, at night, the body of St. Elmo was seen, with seven lighted candles in the round top, and there followed mighty rain and frightful thunder.  I mean the lights were seen which the seamen affirm to be the body of St. Elmo, and they sang litanies and prayers to him, looking upon it as most certain that in these storms, when he appears, there can be no danger.”
