St. Dominic de Guzman

Saint Dominic Biography

  •       Saint Dominic de Guzman was born in 1170 in the Province of Burgos which is now known as Castille-Leon, Spain.
  •       Saint Dominic was educated in Palencia, majoring in the arts and theology.
  •       After St. Dominic finished his studies, he gave away all his earthly belongings.  The St. Dominic quote says, “Would you have me study off these dead skins, when men are dying of hunger?”
  •       At twenty-five years old, Saint Dominic of Guzman joined the Canons Regular following the rules of St. Augustine.
  •       St. Dominic traveled on a mission to Denmark for King Alfonso VIII.  On the way across the Pyrenees, he and his companions met the Cathars who were overrun with heretics.
  •       Saint Dominic Guzman was determined to exterminate heresy.
  •       St. Dominic stayed in southern France to preach among the Cathars and founded the first monastery in Prouille.
  •       Saint Dominic founded the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church in 1215 along with six companions.  They followed rules of prayer and penance.  He received approval from Pope Innocent III in 1216.
  •        St. Dominic de Guzman practiced fasting, silence, and self-denial all his life.  At the age of 51, exhausted from his sacrifices, work, and travel, he died of sickness and fever.

Saint Dominic and the Rosary

Saint Dominic was devoted to the Blessed Virgin and was instrumental in the spread of reciting the Rosary.  The Rosary is an important part of the Dominican Order.  Pope Pius XI said, "The Rosary of Mary is the principle and foundation on which the very Order of Saint Dominic rests for making perfect the life of its members and obtaining the salvation of others."

Saint Dominic Today

Most Catholics today recite the Rosary on a regular basis.  They wear a Saint Dominic medal or a St. Dominic pendant as a reminder to follow the ways of St. Dominic in faith, love, and sacrifice for Jesus Christ.

The following Saint Dominic Prayer is offered by Brother Carlos A. Azpiros Costa, the Master of the Order of Dominicans and the Dominican Nuns of Ireland:

God of Mercy,
In your eternal Wisdom, you called your servant Dominic to set off on a journey of faith as itinerant pilgrim and preacher of grace. With your Word of gentle Truth in his heart and on his lips, Dominic invited the first sisters and brothers to join him in a life of contemplative obedience in the service of the holy preaching.

As we commemorate this Jubilee, we ask you to breathe the Spirit of the risen Christ once again into our hearts and minds. Re-create us, so that we might faithfully and joyfully proclaim the gospel of peace, through the same Christ, our Lord.
