St. Charles Borromeo

St. Charles Life
  •       St. Charles was born on October 2, 1538.  His mother, Margherita de’ Medici was the sister of Pope Pius IV and his father, Giberto II Borromeo was the Count of arona.
  •       At twelve years old, the uncle of St. Charles gave him the office of abbacy.  St. Charles gave his earnings to charity.
  •       Studied canon and civil law at Pavia
  •       Took management of the family affairs after the death of his father in 1554.
  •       Received his doctoral degree in 1559.
  •       St. Charles’ uncle, Cardinal Angelo de’ Medici became Pope Pius IV in 1560.

St Charles Borromeo Patron Saint 
  •       St. Charles was given the position of protonotary apostolic and was entrusted with the seal of the ecclesiastical state.
  •       St. Charles was given the duties of Cardinal of Romagna, the March of Ancona, and supervisor of the Carmelites, Franciscans, and the Knights of Malta.
  •       St. Charles was named Archbishop of Milan where he lived a life of luxury.  While archbishop, he founded the Academy of the Vatican Nights and a college in Pavia.
  •       When his uncle, Pope Pius IV died, St. Charles dedicated himself to reforming the diocese.  He discarded all the ornate decorations, tombs, and ornaments from the church.
  •       When the bubonic plague struck Milan in 1576, St. Charles nursed the sick and buried the dead.
  •       St. Charles contracted a fever and died in Milan on November 3, 1584.
  •       St. Charles was canonized a saint in 1610 and his feast day in November 4

St. Charles Venerated

St. Charles is venerated as a saint of the learning and the arts in Europe. There are many Catholic schools, churches, and parishes dedicated to his name throughout the world.

Many Catholics today wear a St. Charles medal in his honor or give a St. Charles pendant as a gift to friends or relatives who are continuing their higher education.
