St. Blaise

St. Blaise Biography

St. Blaise was born in Armenia during the third century to a noble Christian family.  Not much is known about his childhood or early life until he became a physician and Bishop of Sebastea.  In Italy, he is called San Biagio and in Spain, San Blas.

Medical manuscripts of Aetius Amidenus, who was a physician in the fifth century, mentioned St. Blaise as treating ailments of the throat and choking victims.  Amindenus also mentions that St. Blaise cured animals and lived alone in a cave.

St. Blaise Martyred

St. Blaise refused to deny his Christian faith and was tortured with iron combs and eventually beheaded.  St. Blaise is often depicted in artwork with combs in his hands or crossed candles for blessing throats.  St. Blaise feast day is February 3.

St. Blaise Patron Saint

Saint Blaise is the patron saint of:

  •     Physicians
  •     Sick cattle
  •     Wax candle makers
  •     Wool combers
  •      Wild animals because of cared for them without fear
  •     Those with throat maladies because St. Blaise cured a child who was choking on a fish bone.
St. Blaise Blessing

The Catholic Church offers Blessing of the Throat on the Feast of St. Blaise, every February 3.  The priest holds two crossed candles at the throat of the person to be blessed and recites the St. Blaise Blessing.  The blessing is to prevent any diseases or ailments of the throat and prevent against choking.

Many Catholics wear a St. Blaise medal or a St. Blaise necklace all year round to help prevent against choking and throat diseases.  Parents often have their children wear a St. Blaise medal to protect them from throat ailments as they go about their day.

Catholic St. Blaise Blessing

"Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from illness of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
