St. Bernard of Montjoux

About St. Bernard of Montjoux

Say the phrase “St. Bernard” and almost all people will immediately think of a very large breed dog.  St. Bernard of Montjoux is actually the forbearer of the name Saint Bernard and the person from whom the dog breed derives the name.  He was of Italian descent born around the year 995.  He spent 40 years as a missionary priest in the Alpine Mountains.  During his missionary work he built schools and churches throughout his assigned diocese.

The Alpine Mountains and particularly the mountain passes near Aosta, home base of Saint Bernard and his missionaries were the most commonly traveled routes for a pilgrim journey to and from Rome.  The pass between Italy and Switzerland is called the Great Saint Bernard and the pass between France and Italy is called the Little Saint Bernard.  During his ministry, St. Bernard sensed a calling from God to assist His people in the pilgrimages so he built a hospice at each pass to aid pilgrims in the dangerous journey. The primary dangers were robbers and thugs, and the severe mountain weather.  St. Bernard and his missionaries used huge mastiff dogs to assist them in search and rescue missions.  The dogs have an incredible sense to stay within an established trail, which they can sense even in very deep snow.  These huge mastiffs were bred by the missionaries and are known today as the St. Bernard pet dog.

St. Bernard is remembered in a St. Bernard medal and a St. Bernard medallion as the patron saint of skiers and mountaineers. There are also smaller St. Bernard charms and St. Bernard pendants, which can be worn as a necklace or on the wrist bracelet

St Bernard of Montjoux Prayer

Lord, you have given us Saint Bernard

to be patron of those who live among the alps,

and of those who travel across them.

Protect us by his prayers, and grant that,

as we strive to climb in his footsteps,

we may reach the summit, who is Christ,

living and reigning with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.
