St. Austin

About Saint Austin
  •          Saint Austin is better known as Saint Augustine.  He was born in the city of Carthage in Africa to his parents, Patrick and Monica.
  •          Saint Austin was taught liberal arts and eventually became a noted philosopher, bishop, and doctor.  He was well read in the books of Aristotle and the other ancient philosophers which he read on his own.  He was a brilliant man who understood all that he read about philosophy and theology.
  •          Saint Austin lived a rowdy life until the age of nineteen when he read a philosophy book which taught him to leave the vanities of world behind.  He regretted his past debaucheries and learned about Jesus Christ from his mother.
  •          Saint Austin was eventually ordained a priest and was sent by Pope Saint Gregory to England to preach the words of Jesus Christ.  Saint Austin traveled to England in the hopes of converting the people to the Christian faith.

Saint Austin Travels to England

Saint Austin traveled to England as head of a holy order of monks who went with him.  There were forty monks all together.  They arrived in Anjou but were driven from the town by the women residents.  Saint Austin and his monks tried to rest in the woods outside of town but another cruel woman drove them from that spot.

Miracle of Saint Austin

As Saint Austin picked up his staff to leave the site, his staff flew from his hands and landed three furlongs away from him, impaled in the earth.  When Saint Austin pulled his staff from the ground, a spring of fresh water began to flow.  He and his monks drank from the miraculous spring.  Saint Austin and his monks rested there for the evening and all around them glowed a bright light from Heaven.

When Saint Austin and his monks arose in the morning, Saint Austin wrote these words in the earth, “Here had Austin, the servant of the servants of God, hospitality, whom Saint Gregory the pope hath sent to convert England.”

English People Sorry for Banishing Saint Austin

When the people of England saw the great light and the words Saint Austin had written on the ground, they were sorry for chasing him from the town.  They built a small church on the spot and a great many people came there to worship.

Saint Austin Today

Saint Austin is still revered today, although many people don’t know him by the name Austin.  Christians today are more familiar with the name of St. Augustine, the great philosopher and theologian.

Many Christians wear the Saint Austin medal to honor this great Father of the Church and his many teachings.   A Saint Austin pendant is an ideal gift for any religious occasion because Saint Austin helped in establishing many of the laws regarding the Catholic faith.
