St. Andrew the Apostle

Novena to St. Andrew

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment
in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary,

at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold.

In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God!

to hear my prayer and grant my desires,

through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ,

and of His Blessed Mother.

(It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayer fifteen times a day

from the feast of St. Andrew, on November 30th, until Christmas will obtain what is asked.)

[Imprimatur: +MICHAEL AUGUSTINE, Archbishop of New York, New York, February 6, 1897.]

St Andrew Patron Saint

Saint Andrew Meets Jesus

Saint Andrew lived in Bethsaida in Galilee.  He made was a fisherman by trade and he was a disciple of John the Baptist before he met Jesus.  He was one of the first disciples to follow the way of Jesus; in fact, St. Andrew is the one who introduced Peter to Jesus.  Peter was St. Andrew’s brother.

Scripture describes the day that Saint Andrew first meets Jesus in John 1:35-42, 35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold) the Lamb of God!" 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them) "What are you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39He said to them, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour 40) One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found) the Messiah" (which means Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter.

Saint Andrew Remembered

Saint Andrew is remembered by all Christians today.  He was a faithful apostle of Jesus and remained true to Jesus until the hour of his death.  St. Andrew died a martyrs death on the cross, longing to be with Jesus for eternity.

Catholics today wear Saint Andrew jewelry in remembrance of this devout, holy saint.  A Saint Andrew pendant or a Saint Andrew medal is often given as a Baptism gift for baby boys named Andrew or as a Confirmation gift for young men who take the name of St. Andrew.
