About Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Saint Alphonsus Liguori was born on September 27, 1696 to Neapolitan nobles in Naples.  His parents had him baptized two days after his birth, giving him the name, Alphonsus Mary Antony John Cosmas Damian Michael Gaspard de Liguori.  He is commonly known as Alphonsus Liguori.

Saint Alphonsus Attends Law School

St. Alphonsus entered law school when he was sixteen years old and became a renowned lawyer.  When St. Alphonsus was twenty-seven, he no longer felt that the profession of law was for him.  He wrote to a friend,
"My friend, our profession is too full of difficulties and dangers; we lead an unhappy life and run risk of dying an unhappy death. For myself, I will quit this career, which does not suit me; for I wish to secure the salvation of my soul.”

Saint Alphonsus Studies for the Priesthood

St. Alphonsus left his legal career behind in 1723 to the great dismay of his father and entered the Oratory of St. Philip Neri to begin his religious studies.  He completed his studies in 1726 and was ordained a priest when he was thirty years old.

Saint Alphonsus – Founder of ‘Evening Chapels’

The first few years of his priesthood, St. Alphonsus lived among the homeless children of Naples.  He founded ‘Evening Chapels’ which was a community of prayer, learning the way of Christ, social interaction, and education.  It was under the direction of the young people who stayed there.  By the time of the death of St. Alphonsus, seventy-two of these chapels were built.

Saint Alphonsus – Founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer

St. Alphonsus began teaching in the heart of Naples where destitute people lived in the slums of the city.  He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer whose purpose was to instruct the homeless, destitute, and poor in the ways of God.  St. Alphonsus dedicated himself to teaching the poor.  A new order of nuns founded by Sister Maria Celeste worked along with St. Alphonsus Liguori.

Saint Alphonsus Becomes Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti

In 1762, St. Alphonsus was named Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti.  While he was serving as bishop, he wrote many sermons and books dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and the Blessed Sacrament.

Saint Alphonsus Ligouri Retires

Alphonsus retired in 1775.  He lived in Pagani, Italy with the Redemtorists until he dies in 1787.  St. Alphonsus was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in May 26, 1839.

Saint Alphonsus’ Teachings Live On

The many teachings of this great philosopher and moralist are still relevant for today’s Christians.  Many Christians wear a Saint Alphonsus medal symbolizing their devotion to the Blessed Virgin and the Blessed Sacrament.  A Saint Alphonsus pendant is often given as a gift for religious ceremonies, First Communion, and for Confirmation.
