O/L STAR of the SEA

Our Lady Star of the Sea

The Blessed Virgin Mary is known by many names. She is a beacon of hope for all Catholics, offering her mercy and interceding with her Son, Jesus Christ in the interest of all humankind. Our Lady Star of the Sea is a title for Mary that dates back to the ninth century. The title is derived from the Latin, Stella Maris, which means Star of the Sea.

This title reveals the Blessed Mother as a symbol of hope and a guide for Christians who make their living on the sea or who go on ocean travels.

Our Lady Star of the Seas Origin

  • † 400 AD – St. Jerome interprets the name Mary as stilla maris which translates, drop of the sea
  • † Ninth Century – Paschasius Radbertus wrote about Mary, the Mother of Jesus as the guide to following the way of Jesus “lest we capsize amid the storm-tossed waves of the sea.”
  • † Ninth Century – Ave Maris Stella, a hymn translated, “Hail, Star of the Sea” was widely popular.
  • † Twelfth Century – St. Bernard of Clairvaux said, “If the winds of temptation arise; if you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation, look to the star, call on Mary; if you are tossed upon the waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star, call upon Mary. Should anger avarice or fleshly desire violently assail the frail vessel of your soul, look at the star, call upon Mary.”
  • † May 24, 1953 – Pope Pius XII wrote of Our Lady Star of the Sea in his encyclical, Doctor Mellifluus, quoting Bernard of Clairvaux, “Mary…is interpreted to mean Star of the Sea. This admirably befits the Virgin Mother for as the ray does not diminish the brightness of the star, so neither did the Child born of her tarnish the beauty of Mary’s virginity.”
