Our Lady of Divine Providence History
The first Barnabites of Rome and Our Lady of Divine Providence are intertwined in history. In the year 1611, a church was being built to honor St. Charles Borromeo, the Cardinal Protector of the Barnabite house. The church was to be named the Church of St. Charles ai Catinari. As construction continued, the Barnabites ran out of funds to continue the building.
Father Blaise Prays to Our Lady for Help
The pastor, Father Blaise Palma, made a pilgrimage to Loreto to seek the help of the Virgin Mary. He believed the Blessed Mother would not ignore his pleas for help. Father Palma returned from his pilgrimage and received the financial aid he needed to finish construction on the church.
After receiving the funds for the church, Father Palma wrote a detailed description of his pilgrimage and the intervention of the Virgin Mary. He urged all Catholics to pray to Mary when any hardships or afflictions arose.
Our Lady of Providence Replaced
Once again, Our Lady of Providence comes to the aid of the Barnabites. The Barnabites were forced to leave their house in Rome in 1659. They removed a section of the wall that displayed a painting of the Blessed Virgin and moved it to their new location.
Our Lady of Divine Providence Devotion Established
|While attempting to place the painting above the altar, the workers dropped it and it shattered into small bits. The architect in charge offered to replace the original painting with a painting by Scipion Pulzone which was entitled, Our Lady, Mother of Divine Providence. It depicted the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus in her arms. They placed the painting above the altar of the chapel which was located recite their Divine Office.
The archives of Father Palma were found by Father Januarius Maffetti. He read of Father Palma’s pilgrimage and the intercessions of Our Lady. The writings displayed the love, faith, and devotion that Father Palma had for the Virgin Mary. From these archives, devotion to Our Lady of Divine Providence officially began.
|Since the establishment of devotion to Our Lady of Providence, many replicas of the painting have been produced. Catholics display Our Lady of Providence in their home, entreating help from Mary when they are in need. A gift such as: Our Lady of Providence medal, Our Lady of Providence necklace, Our Lady of Providence charm, or Our Lady of Providence pendant are often given after receiving the Sacraments or on other religious occasions. Catholics have continued devotion to Our Lady of Divine Providence since the Middle Ages.
