Our Lady of Loreto (Our Lady of Loretto)
One of the most honored Catholic shrines in the world is the Holy House of Loreto (Santa Casa di Loreto) located in Italy. For centuries, Catholics have believed that the shrine is the original home of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is the place where Jesus was conceived and spent His early years.

Over four million Catholics visit the basilica every year to view the home where Mary was born and raised Jesus, as well as to see the ancient statue of Our Lady of Loreto which is housed there. The basilica of Loreto was constructed around the home of Mary and Jesus, which is known as the Loreto Shrine. Since the time that the home of Mary was moved to Loreto, she has been referred to as Our Lady of Loreto.

History of Our Lady of Loreto Shrine

The ancient story of Our Lady of Loreto tells of angels carrying the house where Mary lived from the Holy Land to Tersato, Dalmatia. This miraculous event happened in the year 1291. Then in 1294, the angels came once again and flew Mary’s house to Reananti. The angels then carried the house to Loreto, Italy where it remains to this day.

Our Lady of Loreto – The Patron Saint of Aviation

It is because of the flight of Our Lady of Loreto’s home, that she has been named the Patron Saint of Aviation. The Blessed Virgin places under her protection all believers who travel by air, whether as pilots or passengers. She also protects anyone who works on or around aircraft.

Our Lady of Loretto – Patron Saint of Builders

When the home of Mary arrived at Loreto, many construction workers and builders were hired to construct the shrine and basilica. For many years, builders have worked on the Loretto Shrine. It is for this reason that Our Lady of Loretto was also named the Patron Saint of Builders. She protects builders from the dangers of construction work.

Many Catholic aviators and builders wear Our Lady of Loretto jewelry, placing themselves under the merciful protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Giving an Our Lady of Loretto medal to someone who is going on a trip or working at a construction site is a Catholic tradition, especially for concerned family members.
