Our Lady of Africa Basilica
|The Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of Africa Basilica, is an ancient Algiers shrine. The shrine was built for devotion to the Immaculate Conception. Before the basilica was constructed, a small statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was positioned on the ground where the church would be built. The statue was often visited by Barbary marauders and fishermen. They prayed to the statue of the Virgin Mary for calm seas and safe sailing. Eventually, a chapel was built for the Blessed Mother and then a larger church.
Miracle of Our Lady of Africa
While Archbishop Lavigerie of Algiers was traveling to Rome with other priests, hundreds of soldiers, and a Trappist priest when a dangerous storm arose on the seas. The ship’s crew resigned themselves to floundering in the rough sea.
The Archbishop began to pray, making a promise to the Virgin Mary that he would go to the shrine of Our Lady of Africa and pay homage to her if she would save the ship and its crew. The ship miraculously made it to port and the Archbishop kept his promise to Our Lady of Africa.

Prayer to Our Lady of Africa
Our Lady of Africa, Mother of us all,
be specially mindful of the peoples of Africa.
Gather together all those who follow Jesus Christ.
May they be one in the Church of your Son.
May all those who have not yet recognized Jesus
as the Son of the Father be drawn by his Light.
May all those who have been seized by Christ
proclaim the Good News by their whole life.
You who were present with the Apostles
at the beginning of the Church,
support the apostles of today
that they may boldly proclaim the Word of God.
