What Is a Mizpah Coin?
|The Mizpah coin is also referred to as the friendship coin. It’s popularity increased during WWII when loved ones were separated by going oversees and serving in the war. The two piece Mizpah coin was worn by those who would be separated as a symbol of their love and devotion to one another. The Mizpah coins were a beacon of hope that one day each person would be joined together once again. Just as the people are joined, so the two sections of the friendship coin would also be joined again.
The Engraving on the Mizpah Coin
Engraved on the Mizpah charms are the words, “The Lord watch between me and thee, while we are absent one from another." These words are taken from Bible scripture in Genesis 31:49 “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.”
The engraved words are also an adaption from the Hebrew form of goodbye with the words, “May God watch over you and me till we meet again."
Mizpah Coin Meaning
Mizpah represents the loving relationship between two people who are separated from one another. This separation can be either temporary or through the death of one of them. A Mizpah coin pendant is worn by either both of the people in the relationship or by the surviving person as a sign that they will be joined once again either in person or in Heaven.
Many people whose loved ones have died, have the words on the Mizpah engraved on the headstone and then wear a Mizpah coin charm or a Mizpah necklace themselves, symbolizing the eternal life they will have together on day.
|The Friendship Coin
The Mizpah coin is also used as a friendship coin. It is often given as a gift to a good friend who is traveling or moving away as a prayer for their safe return or as a symbol of being together in their hearts even if they are separated by distance.
