Faith, Hope, and Charity Symbols
The faith, hope, & charity symbols are often referred to as the Three Sisters or the Christian trilogy.
- Cross – This is the symbol of faith and total trust and acceptance the word of Jesus, just as He put total trust in God the Father. Phil 2:5 “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who…humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.”
- Anchor – This is the symbol for hope. The anchor dates back to early Christianity as a sign of the steadfastness of the Church. The anchor is mentioned is scripture: Hebrews 6:19 “We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul…”. The anchor symbol is so old; it can be seen in the Roman catacombs.
Faith, Hope and Charity Are the Basis for Christian Life
- Heart – This is the symbol for charity. As seen in 1 Corinthians 13:3, "And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing." In the scripture, charity is seen not only as giving things to the poor, but as a form of love toward other people.
Faith, hope, and charity summarize the basis of living a Christian life. Each one of the virtues are mentioned in Bible scripture and emphasize what Christians must do to follow in the way of Jesus Christ.
The faith, hope, and charity symbols are found created into Christian jewelry. Many Christians wear the faith, hope, charity charms to remind them to live virtuous lives wherever they travel. They are reminded to be loving and kind to all people, spreading Jesus’ teaching by their virtuous example.
The faith, hope, and charity necklace is another form of the three Christian virtues that can be worn always, symbolizing the three most important virtues a Christian must carry close to the heart.
