St. Andrew / Greek Orthodox

The Saint Andrew’s Cross

There are actually two different St. Andrew’s crosses. One of these crosses is the large X shaped cross on which Saint Andrew was crucified. It is said that St. Andrew did not feel worthy being crucified on the same type of cross that Jesus was crucified on. St. Andrew asked that he be crucified on the X shaped cross instead.

St. Andrew was the brother of Peter and an apostle of Jesus. He later became the patron saint of Russia and Roamania because he carried the words of Jesus to Asia Minor, Scythia, Volga, Patras, and Kiev. He is also the patron saint of Greece, Amalfi, Luqa, and even Scotland. The Scottish Flag displays the X shaped Saint Andrew’s Cross. Saint Andrew’s feast day is November 30. Both the Western and Eastern Churches celebrate his feast and it is Scotland’s national day.

Crucifixion of St. Andrew

The other Saint Andrew Cross is the Greek Orthodox style crucifix with three cross bars. The bottom on is slanted with the left side pointing upward toward Heaven and the right side pointing down toward Hell. St. Andrew used this cross to teach that the followers of Jesus will get eternal life in Heaven with Him, while sinners will be cast into the depths of Hell.

The St. Andrew Cross Pendant

St. Andrews Gold Cross The St. Andrew Cross pendant is popular with all Christians. It is worn as a religious piece of jewelry to show devotion to Jesus Christ and His teachings. The St. Andrew’s cross is created in the traditional Greek Orthodox style and sometimes comes with Jesus crucified or just a simple bare cross.

The Saint Andrew’s gold cross and the Saint Andrew’s silver cross are wonderful gifts for Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations. They are timeless gifts whose style dates back centuries and the crosses carry with them the history of Christianity.
