Our Lady of Peace Cathedral - Honolulu
Our Lady of Peace is the patroness of the religious
order, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus
and Mary. This order was founded during the French Revolution
by Peter Coudrin. In 1827 members of the order sailed
to Hawaii and established a church in the Hawaiian Islands
which was dedicated as the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Peace in Honolulu in the year 1843. It is the oldest
Catholic cathedral in the United State that is still
used for worship today and in 1972, the Cathedral was
listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Diocese of Honolulu has three patrons:
* Our Lady of Peace (Malia O Ka Malu)
* Blessed
Damien of Moloka'i
* Blessed Marianne of Moloka'i
Our Lady of Peace for Today's Catholics
Our Lady of Peace is still relevant for today's Catholics.
The Blessed
Virgin is loved and venerated by Catholics all over
the world. Believers pray to Mary for her guidance,
love, and mercy. They ask that she intercede with her
Son, for personal petitions and prayers for peace in
the world.
Roman Catholics are known for their love for Jesus'
mother and they wear Our Lady of Peace jewelry in her
honor. The Blessed Virgin has many titles but she carries
the same message of peace, mercy, and love, no matter
what her name or where she appears. Wearing an Our Lady
of Peace medal is a symbol of devotion to the Blessed
Mother and a reminder to all Catholics of the sacrifices
she made during her life in order to be the Mother of
God.
Prayer to Our Lady Queen of Peace
Mary, Mother of God and Our Mother, Queen of Peace!
You came to us to lead us to God. Obtain for us the
grace not only to say: "Be it done to me according
to Your will!", but to live it, as You did. Into
Your hands we put our hands, so that You may lead us
to Him amidst these afflictions and woes. Through Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
