Our Lady of Knock Apparition
Unlike many of the other apparitions of the Blessed
Mary, Our Lady of Knock did not appear alone on
August 21, 1879. Along with the Blessed Mother, St.
Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared, as well.
Witnesses consisting of men, women, and children revealed
that the three saintly apparitions appeared at the small
church of St. John the Baptist in Knock, Ireland which
is located in County Mayo. Traveling to Our Lady of
Knock Shrine is one of the most popular pilgrimages
made by Catholics.
Our Lady of Knock Description
* Blessed Mother - she was described as hovering above
the ground, wearing a flowing cloak of white that buttoned
at the neck. She wore a golden crown that glowed brilliantly.
Sparkling crosses adorned the top of the crown. Our
Lady of Knock was fervently praying, with her head looking
up toward Heaven. Her hands were raised to shoulder
height and facing inward.
Joseph - St. Joseph was also dressed in a white
robe and was positioned at Mary's right. He lowered
his head in reverence to the Virgin Mary.
John the Evangelist - St. John stood at Our Lady
of Knock's left. He wore a mitre, a long robe, and held
a book in his hand. He seemed to be preaching to the
Lamb and Altar - On St. John's left was an altar.
Atop the altar was a lamb and a cross was standing behind
It is believed that the purpose of the apparition of
Our Lady of Knock was to teach the people the four attributes
needed to be followers of Jesus
* The humility of St. Joseph
* Prayer as seen by Our Lady
* Following Scripture as taught by St.
* Observing the sacrifice of the Mass as symbolized
by the lamb
Living the Christian Life of Our Lady
Living the way of Christ as interpreted by the Our Lady
of Knock Ireland apparition requires humbleness, prayer,
Scripture, and Mass. A reminder for Catholics to follow
these attributes is to wear a Lady of Knock medal. Throughout
the day the Our Lady of Knock pendant encourages Catholics
to strive to live a life with Jesus Christ.
