The Early Christian
Ichthus History
During the years following the crucifixion of Jesus,
anyone suspected of being a Christian were persecuted
by the Romans. They were tortured, crucified, sent into
the arenas to be ripped apart by lions and other wild
animals. The early Christians remained faithful, hiding
in catacombs and caves. They met secretly to discuss
the teachings of Jesus and how to go about spreading
His word.
The early Christians didn't know who to trust, so they
developed a secret sign as a symbol of believers in
Jesus
Christ. The secret sign they chose was the Ichthus
symbol. This symbol was not suspicious to the Romans
because the fish was an ancient pagan symbol used by
the Greeks. They would draw the Ichthus at the mouth
of the cave or above the door of a home, to let other
Christians know that they could meet in that place.
The Ichthus Christian fish allowed the early Christians
and disciples to spread the word of Jesus to other people
without the fear of being discovered by Roman soldiers.
The Ichthus symbol spread throughout Christianity and
is still used by Christians today.
Ichthus Cross Symbol
Many Christians today wear Ichthus jewelry as a symbol
of faith in Jesus. They are thankful to the early Christians
for carrying on the teachings of Jesus Christ which
allow today's Christians to practice their beliefs openly.
The Ichthus cross symbol reminds Christians of the persecution
the early Christians endured for their faith and the
death and Resurrection of Jesus from the cross, so all
people can have eternal life in Heaven.
Ichthus Jesus Symbol
Like the Ichthus cross, the Ichthus Jesus symbol incorporates
the name of Jesus with the early Christian Ichthus.
The name of Jesus is written inside the body of the
Ichthus design so there is no doubt as to its Christian
meaning. The Ichthus Jesus pendant is worn proudly by
many Christians today.
Many other Ichthus jewelry designs are available for
today's Christians. There are Ichthus bracelets, Ichthus
charms, Ichthus rings, and Ichthus pendants. All these
Ichthus jewelry pieces are symbols of devotion to Jesus
Christ.
