Our Lady of La Salette Symbolism

Our Lady of La Salette appeared to the two children Maximin and Melanie in 1846. She brought with her a message of peace for all people, explaining what mankind must do to get back into her Son's good graces. The apparition of Our Lady of La Salette is steeped in symbolism.

The Symbols

* Bright Light - The apparition of Mary radiates with bright light. The light signifies the light of the resurrection. Her clothing glows with light just as those of Jesus on the mount of the Transfiguration.

* The Crucifix - Light also shines from the large crucifix Mary wears on her breast. The religious cross represents Mary's mission from the foot of the cross to give birth to the world in the Faith.

* Hammer and Pincers - On each side of the La Salette Crucifix are the hammer and pincers which are the tools of the Passion of Jesus.

* The Chain - Mary wears a chain around her neck symbolizing the sins and injustices of the world.

* Roses - Roses are around the edges of Mary's shawl, at her feet, and crowning her head. These represent the rosary which leads followers of Jesus along the path of the catholic cross to salvation.

* Tears - The Blessed Mother cried the entire time she spoke to the children. Her tears represent the tears she shed for Jesus at Mount Calvary. The tears are also a sign of her great mercy for all people.

Today, the La Salette Cross is still seen at the many shrines which have been built around the world for Our Lady of La Salette. The La Salette crucifix is also worn my many Christian who show devotion to Our Lady. They wear the religious cross on a chain just as Our Lady of La Salette did when she appeared to Maximin and Melanie.
