What is Cursillo?
The Spanish word Cursillo means "short course".
A Cursillo weekend consists of speakers, prayers, discussion,
self worth awareness, and the discernment of and action
upon the will of God. There is the idea that the 3 days
are the "short course" and then there is a
phrase The Fourth Day. The fourth day is basically the
remaining days of the person's life and is expected
to be devoted to discerning the will of God and putting
faith to work in the community. The means to attain
success in the ongoing fourth day process is through
piety, study and action. The many published Cursillo
prayers and wearing the Cursillo Cross are essential
parts of a person's prayer life in order to maintain
the strength and assistance attained by Cursillo.
Cursillo Prayer and Palanca
The Cursillo Movement has created a prayer term to
guide its followers, known as the mystery of the Palanca.
This Spanish word means lever, and the concept of the
Cursillo prayer is the lever by which participants seek
the grace of God in a humble, expectant and never ceasing
manner. Usually, members wear the Cursillo
Cross during the Cursillo Prayer Traditions, which
do not break new ground and are basic tenets of the
Catholic faith:
*Holy Mass
*Eucharistic Adoration
*Holy Communion
*Pray the Rosary
*Read Scripture
*Stations of the Cross
*Liturgy of the Hours
*Chaplet of Divine Mercy
*Visit time with The Blessed Sacrament
*Personal fasting, self denial and almsgiving
Future of the Fourth Day and Cursillo
Prayer
Nearly all of the Cursillo Movement and Cursillo prayers
are exactly the same as the principals of the Catholic
faith. This sameness leads in some cases to lukewarm
acceptance by many clergy and lay people. Their thoughts
are that the gifts of The Holy
Spirit given in the Sacrament of Confirmation are
sufficient for deepening an understanding of God's will
and Jesus'
teachings. Given the shared commonality of content and
approach, Cursillo prayer and the Cursillo movement
can be viewed as an evangelization within the more encompassing
Catholic faith.
